PLEDGE: Stop the Federal "License to Discriminate" Against LGBT Americans

Despite the months-long national backlash to state legislation designed to target LGBT Americans, the deceptively titled First Amendment Defense Act (FADA), which did not advance last year, has returned to the United States Congress. The "First Amendment Defense Act" (S1598/HR2802) is dangerously similar to so many of the anti-LGBT bills introduced in state legislatures this year, as it would allow businesses and individuals to deny services to LGBT people.

The so-called First Amendment Defense Act would allow businesses and individuals to cite their religious beliefs as an excuse for denying services to LGBT people. It is so broadly that it would leave unenforceable much of President Obama's executive order extending non-discrimination protections to LGBT employees of federal contractors – and it could even allow a school that receives federal funding to fire a teacher suspected of having premarital sex with her longtime boyfriend.
